The Gateway Gators (5-5) return to West Allegheny Friday night for a WPIAL Class 5A playoff matchup against the Indians (6-4). The No. 12-seeded Gators will look to avenge an early-season loss to the No. 5-seeded Indians and advance to the quarterfinals.
The teams previously met on September 11, when West Allegheny celebrated Homecoming with a 49-10 victory. Gateway struck first on a 39-yard field goal by Jackson Mikulandrich, but the Indians responded with 35 unanswered points before halftime.
West Allegheny quarterback Mason Bryan led a balanced offensive attack, while Brodie Cornell scored twice on the ground and intercepted two passes. Gateway’s Darrell Harper added a late touchdown run.
Both teams enter the playoffs looking to bounce back from regular-season finale losses. Gateway fell to Woodland Hills, 37-24, while West Allegheny lost to undefeated Upper St. Clair, 45-13.
For Gateway, the keys will be limiting turnovers, containing West Allegheny’s rushing attack, and finding the offensive consistency that was missing in September. With nearly two months to make adjustments, the Gators hope for a different outcome when the stakes are highest.
The winner advances to face No. 4 North Hills in the WPIAL Class 5A quarterfinals on November 13.
